“The soul is a terrible reality.
It can be bought, and sold, and bartered away.
It can be poisoned, or made perfect.
There is a soul in each one of us. I know it.”
– Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
The Story Behind Dorian Gray
The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a man who wishes to stay young forever while his portrait bears the burden of time and sin. Dorian indulges in every pleasure, believing he can escape consequence.
As Dorian’s actions grow darker, his portrait becomes grotesque, reflecting the corruption of his soul. He ignores the warning signs, and suffers for it in the end.
This cautionary tale serves as the foundation for our business philosophy. We will never abandon principles for profit, sacrifice the future for short term gain, or act callously towards others.
To break the fourth wall, the Picture of Dorian Gray was a very impactful read for me.
For a good portion of my life, I've pursued financial and material success. There's nothing wrong with ambition, but the story of Dorian Gray is a reminder not to let these pursuits detract from our humanity
It is my silhouette in the mirror. Does it reflect who I am?
